Chapter Eight

I walk in the house and find Cliff and Hillary sitting at the kitchen table.

Driving home, listening to their messages, I’d pieced together what had happened in the short time I’d been with Mellors.

“Hill, I’m sorry,” I say, bursting into the kitchen. “ I had no idea you were coming and I went to the gym.”

Obviously, I’m not dressed for the gym. And, obviously, I’m not carrying a gym bag. I’ve already thought about this, and if pressed, I’ll say I got one of those lockers where you can keep your stuff at the gym. I realize now I should have dressed for the gym to begin with. I am not a good liar, not a good sneak, not a good . . . cheat.

I am officially having a full-blown affair.

Hillary is saying something, but I missed it. “Uh-huh,” I say, nodding.

“You never mentioned that Hillary lost her job,” Cliff says, somewhat accusingly. He has every reason to look at me strangely for that oversight: It’s completely unlike me not to run to Cliff immediately with such news. We used to talk about absolute minutiae, let alone my ambitious sister blowing up her career.

“I . . . I thought I did,” I say lamely. They look at me with almost identical expressions of suspicion mingled with concern. Actually, their expressions aren’t identical: Cliff’s has a slight bafflement to it, while Hillary looks somewhat accusing.

“I was just telling Cliff the whole sordid story—how stupid I was to have an affair,” Hillary says. “It was completely stupid,” she says pointedly, glaring at me.

“Everyone makes mistakes,” Cliff says. “And, selfishly, I’m happy to have you out here for a while—albeit at the expense of your job.”

They smile at each other like co-conspirators. I try not to panic, feeling like I’ve started watching a movie halfway through.

“Conn, Cliff had an amazing idea—a completely generous, amazing idea,” she says, getting up and pouring herself more coffee. “He asked me to do some PR for Chatterbox.”

“Really?” I say, not knowing what to do with myself. The normal thing would be to sit down with them at the table, but I’m sure I reek of sex. “That’s great. How long are you going to be out here? All week?”

Again, Hillary and Cliff look at each other in a way that makes me wonder what whopper of a conversation I missed during my car ride home.

“Actually, I invited Hillary to stay for a while. I mean, you keep telling me you’re lonely out here, and I could really use a great in-house PR person, even temporarily.”

My first thought is of Mellors. How can I see him with Hillary hanging around the house? It’s terrible—I should be thrilled that my sister will be around for a while, finally putting an end to my solitary days of drifting. Instead, I’m panicked that she’ll make it harder for me to sleep with Mellors. This is so wrong. A new low, for sure.

“Great,” I say weakly. “I really need a quick shower.
